What is gear coupling?

A gear coupling is a mechanical advanced device that is designed to transmit torque between two shafts that are not collinear. The coupling typically consists of two flexible joints, one fixed to each shaft. These joints are often connected by a third shaft called the spindle. Gear coupling manufacturers understand that though one may not think of gears as being flexible, gear couplings are considered to be a flexible coupling.

It is a mechanical device coupling that typically consists of two flexible joints, one fixed to each shaft. Manufactures produce Gear couplings that ordinarily come in two variations, flanged sleeve and continuous sleeve.

Flexible Gear Couplings basically consist of two hubs, with crowned external teeth and two outer sleeves with internal spur teeth. They are mechanized to fine tolerances for proper meshing of the gears as well as for inter-changeability. Therefore, manufacturers design flexible gear couplings to provide a mechanical connection between the rotating shafts of mechanical equipment, using gear mesh accommodate inherent misalignment while transmitting the power and torque between the connected shaft.

Flexible SSPTP gear couplings are usually used to transmit torque from one shaft to another when the two shafts are slightly misaligned. They can accommodate varying degrees of misalignment up to 3° and some parallel misalignment. In addition, they can also be used for vibration damping or noise reduction.

When properly selected, installed and maintained, they can provide long life and good reliability. Gear couplings offer several advantages over other couplings, including moderate misalignment capacity, exceptional torsional stiffness and very high torque density.

Being one of the pioneers of flexible gear couplings manufacturing in Pune, SSPTP S S power transmission products always try to produce the superior quality & highly durable flexible gear couplings.

Types of Gear coupling

There are two main types of flexible gear couplings utilized in various kinds of machines
Full flexible Gear Couplings
Full flexible gear coupling, the gear couplings utilized in most industrial applications, is the double engagement forged steel coupling.
Full flexible gear couplings will make up for both parallel shaft misalignment and angular misalignment and has a huge end float capacity.
Half flexible gear Couplings
Half flexible Gear Coupling comprises of a flexible and rigid half. The half flexible gear coupling is a standard half coupling that comprises of an external sleeve and an inner hub, while, the rigid half consists of a flanged hub.

Key Features of gear coupling

Gear couplings are equipped with several advantages over other couplings like,

  • Moderate misalignment capacity
  • Exceptional torsional stiffness
  • Very high torque density
  • Flexible joint can be connected to each of the shaft, while, there is a third shaft to fix the two joints.

Applications of gear coupling

Manufacturers produce gear couplings that are used to connect component between the two shafts. The kind of rigidity in its connectivity, the ability of gear couplings to be transmitted, and the zone of application of their working play a noteworthy job in the choice of the type of coupling.

  • Gear couplings are commonly employed in large industrial machines such as pumps, blowers, compressors, mixers, etc.
  • Flexible gear couplings produced by gear coupling manufacturers are used in smaller motion control systems, mostly with a polymer sleeve as a means of reducing backlash. However, the zero-backlash coupling designs are usually better suited to these applications.
  • Gear Coupling manufacturers produce couplings that are utilized to join two shafts at their finishes.
  • Gear couplings are mechanical devices that are utilized to transmit the torque in the middle of the two non-coaxial shafts.
  • Mostly and widely gear coupling use of EOT power transmission as well as where forward reverser application is there with more misalignment then 1 degree and very high torque.
